Not So Angry Bird

Irwin Hau | Creative Inspiration

Since 2009, everyone’s gone wild about Angry birds. With its wide range of spin offs (including Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space), plush toys and other accessories, the Finnsh game dev company doesn’t seem to be stopping here. Originally built for the iPhone, the game has now been translated for various console platforms and smart devices.

Here are some interesting facts about the game you might not know:

  • The pigs that are also a signature featured in the game were inspired by the swine flu epidemic which was in the news at the time. The perfect enemy if you ask me.
  • The game mechanics were inspired by other similar physics based games like Crush the Castle. A definite improvement in graphics and style.
  • Rovio has been valued at $8.8 billion dollars, almost as much as Nokia. Not bad for a 3 student start up back in the day. Accordingly to Rovio CEO, Mikael Hed, “the strong growth in revenue clearly demonstrates the popularity of the Angry Birds brand.” “The heavy investments made in 2011 to all business areas will be seen in future products. To ensure continuous success we need to be creative and stay focused on entertaining our millions of fans by continuously developing new and innovative products and services.” http://news.yahoo.com/angry-birds-generated-106-million-rovio-2011-051529255.html If this is the meaning of Angry, I want in.
