Conversation with Jason Morris: The Future of Association Management
At Chromatix, we’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Membes on many projects over the years.
Through these collaborations, we’ve seen firsthand the important role technology plays in helping associations better serve their members, manage events, streamline administration and create stronger digital experiences.
Recently, I sat down with Jason Morris, Managing Director of Membes (an Association Management System), to discuss some of the biggest challenges facing associations today, how member expectations are changing, and what organisations should be considering when it comes to technology and growth.
Below are some of the key insights from our conversation.
What is Membes?
Membes is an Association Management System (AMS) designed specifically for professional associations, industry bodies, not-for-profits and member-based organisations.
Unlike generic business software, Membes has been built around the unique needs of associations. This includes membership management, event registrations, member communications, continuing professional development (CPD), reporting, websites, committees, finance and much more.
Jason explained that the goal has always been to provide associations with a single platform that brings everything together, reducing the need for multiple disconnected systems and making life easier for both staff and members.
With more than two decades of experience in the sector, Membes has become a trusted technology partner for associations looking to improve efficiency, engagement and member experience.
Why Do Associations Need Specialised Software?
According to Jason, many associations start out using a collection of different systems that have been added over time.
A spreadsheet might manage memberships. An event platform might handle registrations. A separate website manages content. Email marketing sits elsewhere. Before long, teams are spending significant time moving information between systems and trying to keep everything in sync.
The challenge is that associations operate differently from traditional businesses.
They often need to manage memberships, renewals, accreditation programs, CPD requirements, committees, conferences, sponsorships and member communications all at the same time.
Jason explained that specialised association software is designed to support these requirements from day one, helping organisations reduce administration and focus more energy on delivering value to members.
What Is The Biggest Challenge Associations Face Today?
One of the biggest themes that emerged during our discussion was complexity.
Many associations have evolved over decades, adding new systems and processes as their organisation grows. While each system may solve a specific problem, the combined result can create inefficiencies, duplicate work and frustration for staff.
Jason noted that many teams spend far too much time managing technology rather than focusing on their members.
When information is spread across multiple systems, reporting becomes harder, communication becomes less effective, and opportunities can be missed.
For many organisations, simplifying operations and creating a single source of truth has become a major priority.
How Have Member Expectations Changed?
Member expectations have changed significantly over the last decade.
Today’s members expect convenience.
They want to register for events online, update their details themselves, access resources instantly and engage with their association whenever it suits them.
Jason explained that many members now compare their experience with an association to the experience they receive from leading consumer platforms and digital services.
This means associations need to think carefully about how easy they are to interact with online.
The organisations that continue to invest in member experience are often the ones that achieve stronger engagement, better retention and higher member satisfaction.
Why Is Integration So Important?
A recurring topic throughout our conversation was the importance of integration.
When memberships, events, communications, websites and reporting all operate from separate systems, inefficiencies naturally occur.
Staff spend time entering information multiple times. Reports require manual work. Data becomes inconsistent.
Jason believes associations achieve better outcomes when these functions work together within a connected ecosystem.
Not only does this improve operational efficiency, but it also creates a better experience for members because information remains accurate and interactions become more seamless.
How Is AI Impacting Associations?
Like many industries, associations are beginning to explore how artificial intelligence can improve operations and member engagement.
Jason sees AI as an opportunity to automate repetitive administrative tasks, improve access to information and help teams make better use of organisational data.
While AI won’t replace the relationships that associations build with their members, it has the potential to help organisations become more efficient and responsive.
As the technology matures, Jason expects AI to become an increasingly valuable tool within the association sector.
What Should Associations Consider When Reviewing Their Technology?
When evaluating new technology, Jason recommends looking beyond individual features.
The real question isn’t whether a system can perform a specific task today.
The more important question is whether the platform can support the organisation’s long-term goals, reduce administrative burden and improve the experience for members.
Technology should ultimately enable organisations to focus more on their mission and less on managing systems.
Final Thoughts
One thing that stood out during my conversation with Jason was his deep understanding of the association sector.
After spending more than twenty years helping associations navigate growth, member engagement and digital transformation, it’s clear that Membes has been built with a genuine understanding of the challenges these organisations face.
A big thank you to Jason for taking the time to share his insights and perspectives.
For associations looking to improve member engagement, streamline administration and better connect their digital systems, there were plenty of valuable lessons to take away from our discussion.
