Critical PHP Security Vulnerability: Is Your Business Website Protected?

Julian Chan | Digital Industry News

A Major Website Security Vulnerability Has Been Discovered. Is Your Website at Risk?

A newly discovered security vulnerability affecting PHP, the technology behind approximately 70% of websites worldwide, has raised serious concerns for businesses using WordPress, Drupal, Joomla & other PHP-based platforms. Disclosed on 21 October 2026 by cybersecurity researchers at Wiz, the vulnerabilities known as PHP2Shell could allow attackers to execute malicious code on vulnerable website servers without needing administrator login credentials. For Australian businesses, this could mean website downtime, compromised customer information, lost enquiries & damage to brand reputation.
The good news? Security patches are available. The important question is whether your website has been updated.

What Is PHP2Shell & Why Should You Care?

PHP2Shell refers to critical vulnerabilities discovered within PHP, the underlying programming language that powers many popular website platforms. Depending on the website’s configuration, an attacker could potentially exploit these weaknesses to:

  • Access sensitive information: Expose data held within vulnerable server environments.
  • Disrupt your website: Take your website offline, affecting enquiries & sales.
  • Compromise website security: Execute malicious code on affected servers.
  • Damage customer confidence: Put your business reputation at risk.

Unlike a typical WordPress plugin vulnerability, PHP2Shell affects the underlying technology running your website. This means updating WordPress plugins alone won’t necessarily protect you.

Does This Affect WordPress Websites?

Potentially, yes.
WordPress relies on PHP to function. Researchers demonstrated that certain vulnerable environments running WordPress, Drupal & Joomla could be exploited. However, not every WordPress website is vulnerable or has been compromised. Your risk depends on your PHP version, hosting environment, server configuration & whether the latest security patches have been applied. Even a fully updated WordPress website could remain exposed if its underlying PHP environment hasn’t been secured.
Not sure whether your website is protected? Chromatix can check it for you.

What Could a Website Security Breach Cost Your Business?

Your website is often one of your most important sales & marketing assets. When it’s compromised, the consequences can extend well beyond fixing a technical issue.

  • Lost revenue: Website downtime can interrupt enquiries, bookings & sales.
  • Lost trust: Security incidents can damage your professional reputation.
  • Unexpected costs: Recovery, investigation & repairs can become expensive.
  • Business disruption: Compromised systems can affect daily operations & customer communication.

For industries handling sensitive customer information, the consequences could be even greater. Website security isn’t just about protecting your technology.
It’s about protecting your customers, revenue & business continuity.

How Can You Protect Your Website?

Security updates addressing PHP2Shell were released on 21 October 2026.
If you’re unsure whether your website has been patched, we recommend five immediate checks.

  1. Verify your PHP version: Confirm your website runs a supported, securely patched version.
  2. Check your hosting security: Ensure your hosting provider has applied the relevant PHP updates.
  3. Review WordPress updates: Keep WordPress, plugins & themes updated to reduce other security risks.
  4. Confirm your backups: Make sure recent website backups are available & recoverable.
  5. Review your overall security: Identify outdated software, potential vulnerabilities & gaps in your maintenance process.

Latest Patched PHP Versions

PHP version Patched release
PHP 8.5 8.5.12
PHP 8.4 8.4.27
PHP 8.3 8.3.36
PHP 8.2 8.2.35
PHP 8.1 or older Upgrade or verify vendor security support

Some hosting providers may apply equivalent security patches through supported vendor releases.

If your website is hosted with WP Engine, protective measures are already in place to help reduce the risk from the recently disclosed PHP vulnerabilities. WP Engine is managing the response at the hosting level, including server security updates, so you do not need to install the PHP patches yourself.

Why Ongoing Website Maintenance Matters

One of the most significant findings from Wiz’s research is that these vulnerabilities existed undetected for more than a decade. Even professionally developed websites can become exposed when new security threats emerge. That’s why website security shouldn’t stop when your website goes live. Regular maintenance, security updates, monitoring & backups help reduce risks before they turn into expensive business problems.
A well-maintained website helps protect your investment, maintain customer confidence & keep your business running.
